The packs of wolves that live in these woods have many stories, but none of them are as important as the first story. It's the story of the Curse. It's the story that tells us why the wolves can become humans, why they can do things that are far beyond the rest of the world, and why they can never leave these lands.
Long, long ago there was only one pack, and only one leader. His name was Halluraya, and the wolves say that he was the greatest king they ever had. It seemed like there was nothing that Halluraya could not overcome, the wolves thought that he was almost a god. Until the people came, and this city was built, the wolves were correct. There was nothing that could beat Halluraya down, until he met the humans.
This land was the perfect place for a city, so that's what we built there. It was not until after the last building was constructed that we noticed the wolves in the forest. They were the largest we had ever seen, so we slaughtered them. We did not think that what we were doing was a bad thing, we were just terrified that the wolves would kill anyone who wandered into the woods.
Halluraya did not have a hope in the world of winning in any fight against humans. We had guns, they had teeth and claws. That's just the way it was. But Halluraya was a clever wolf. He knew of a way to make his pack more powerful, and that way was through his sister.
Now, his sister was something of a witch. She was called The Alchemist, because no one but Halluraya knew her name. When Halluraya realized that he was fighting a hopeless battle he hid the remaining wolves in the caves under the darkest part of the forest and went out by himself to find his sister, who did not live with the pack. At first she was unwilling to help, but Halluraya convinced her. The Alchemist was a selfish, greedy wolf, and she set a high price for her help.
The desperate Halluraya agreed, knowing that he had no other choice. The Alchemist promised that by the end of the next month, all of his wolves would have the power to win the battle with the humans. She warned Halluraya that in two months, whether he had won his battle or not, she would take her payment.
As it turned out, The Alchemist stayed true to her word. Within the month each wolf from Halluraya's pack discovered that they could preform miracles. Each wolf had his own power, and each could become human if they desired it. Glorying in their newfound power, the wolves renewed their attacks on the human city. They devastated it. Soon everyone was no longer fighting along the walls, they were fighting in the streets, and in the stores, and in their own homes. The humans found themselves out of luck.
As the second month ended, Halluraya launched a final attack on the city, intending to kill every human so that his pack would never be in danger again. Halluraya attacked to late. Halfway through his battle exactly half of the wolves from his pack disappeared into thin air. Horrified, the remaining wolves fled, believing this to be the humans doing. Only Halluraya realized that his sister had taken her payment.
When they reached their old home, the remaining half of the wolves found The Alchemist and the other wolves already there. The Alchemist explained the price they had all paid for receiving their abilities, even though Halluraya had never asked them for their opinion. Since The Alchemist was never one to lie, she explained the new rules.
1) The wolves of the forest will be divided into two packs, or districts. The Black District will be under the leadership of The Alchemist, and her heirs. The Red District will remain under Halluraya and his descendants control.
2) The wolves will only be able to use their abilities in human form.
3) If is forbidden for wolves from the Red and Black Districts to mate with wolves of another district or with wolves outside both districts. Wolves who disobey will be punished with death.
4) No wolf will ever be able to leave either District, nor will they ever be able to disobey or deliberately resist any descendant of either The Alchemist or Halluraya.
After that, the wolves were forced to go their separate ways. Over the years each district grew large and divided into Packs, though each wolf always remained faithful to their respective leaders. And even though a long time has passed, no wolf in that forest will ever forget what we, the humans, did to them. They blame us for their curse. That, children, is why you must never go into the forest, or the wolves will kill you.
