This isn't exactly a story or anything, but it's for a weekly grade in my Drama class. That we have to write scripts about anything. So here's my week one- tell me what you think and if I should keep writing this one, or start a new one(: k. thx. enjoy!
ACT I no one ever catches me HELLO SEATTLE - by OWL CITY is playing in the background. The camera is zooming into the city and shows scenes of everyday life. As Melanie starts talking, the camera slowly 'drives' to the school, 'walks' into the school, and into a classroom where it zooms up on one boy and one girl sitting next to each other. MELANIE : Falling in love with you felt that way. I felt strange things going on inside of me, and I knew that these things weren't things I would recover from. These were changes that were shaping the way things were going to be, and I wouldn't find out how until later. HELLO SEATTLE dims out, the teacher's voice and distant chatter is heard. The boy and the girl share glances every once in a while but they don't talk. STEPHAN : a boy with messy brown hair and brown eyes he's wearing jeans and a regular t-shirt with writing on it. MELANIE : a girl with dark brown hair in a pony tail; she has a preppy brand name shirt on, wearing soccer shorts.
STEPHAN : Hey. A pause is there, Melanie is just seen writing on a piece of paper, not knowing he was talking to her.
STEPHAN : Um, hello? MELANIE : Me? STEPHAN : Yeah. MELANIE : Oh, hi. Sorry. I didn't know you were talking to me... STEPHAN : It's okay. I'm Stephan. MELANIE : Melanie. STEPHAN : I know. MELANIE : How? STEPHAN : You're in all of my classes... MELANIE : I am? STEPHAN : Yeah. MELANIE : Oh. Sorry, I'm really bad with names and faces. STEPHAN : It's okay.
An awkward silence is there while they keep looking back at each other and their paper.
MELANIE : Yeah.
Melanie turns to do her work and Stephan interrupts, causing her to look back.
STEPHAN : So... MELANIE : So.... what? STEPHAN : Is it true... MELANIE : That I went out with Josh last year? Yeah. STEPHAN : How did you know-? MELANIE : What you were going to say? That's what everyone asks me when they meet me. STEPHAN : Oh, sorry. MELANIE : It's fine. I'm use to it.
Another awkward silence follows and Melanie turns back to her work, Stephan is still looking at her.
STEPHAN : Hey. MELANIE : Yeah? STEPHAN : You were in 7th hour Geography last year, right? MELANIE : Yeah, why? STEPHAN : Remember me? The guy with the- BOTH : Ponytails! MELANIE : Oh my god, that was you? STEPHAN : Yup. MELANIE : I still have that picture on my phone! STEPHAN : What?! MELANIE : Tyler took it and he sent it to me. STEPHAN : Oh my god, no. Wait- you and Tyler are friends? MELANIE : Yeah, have been since fifth grade. STEPHAN : Oh, I never knew that. MELANIE : How could you not? Almost everyone knows it... probably because Mike spread it around last year that I kinda liked him. STEPHAN : Oh. Well, I didn't know that. So you liked Tyler, then Josh? MELANIE : Well... technically I didn't... but that's okay. STEPHAN : Then who did you like between those people? MELANIE : This guy, who I used to be friends with, but then he moved away. STEPHAN : Oh. That sucks. Anyone after Josh? MELANIE : A ton of camp jerks... but I never, like, really liked any of them anyways. STEPHAN : So you're not over Josh yet? MELANIE : Yeah. Obviously. STEPHAN : How come?
Melanie looks at Stephan with a strange look.
MELANIE : Why are you so... nosy? STEPHAN : What are you talking about? MELANIE : I mean, why do you want to know every single little detail? STEPHAN : I don't know. I just want to? MELANIE : Oh-kay... So, how many girlfriends did you have? STEPHAN : Let's not talk about it. MELANIE : Hey, I told you about my sucky love life, your turn. STEPHAN : I'd rather not. MELANIE : Fine. STEPHAN : Fine. MELANIE : Fine, what? STEPHAN : I had a couple... MELANIE : Yeah, I kinda figured.
Awkward silence once more.
MELANIE : Dead babies. STEPHAN : What? MELANIE : We just killed a lot of babies... STEPHAN : How? MELANIE : Awkward silences kills babies... or a gay one is born. STEPHAN : Okay... MELANIE : Yeah. Sorry... Anyways... STEPHAN : So... MELANIE : Hmnn... STEPHAN : Your eyes are pretty. MELANIE : Thanks. STEPHAN : Welcome. MELANIE : Hey, aren't you friends with Kade? STEPHAN : Yeah. MELANIE : Well. Kim likes him. I think. STEPHAN : Really? She always denies it when I ask her. MELANIE : And what she tells her girl friends are different from what she tells her guy friends. STEPHAN : Oh. Well, I guess that's true, what I tell Kade is more honest than what I tell Kim. MELANIE : What about me? STEPHAN : What about you? MELANIE : Are you honest with me? STEPHAN : It depends. Are you honest with me? MELANIE : I can't tell lies... I can when I'm acting, but that's about it. STEPHAN : Really? MELANIE : Yeah, it kinda sucks. STEPHAN : How come you can't? MELANIE : I don't know, it's like, if I do I feel really guilty after-wards... and I end up telling the truth anyways. STEPHAN : I just learn to tell lies. It makes things easier, then people won't bug you about things you don't want to talk about. MELANIE : Well, that's true... but I tell the truth- the truth that they want to hear. So, let's say someone asked me if I still like Josh. I just say, what makes you think I still like Josh? And they don't question me further, they immediately assume that I either like him or I don't, based on what they want to hear. So I'm not exactly telling lies, but I'm not answering the direct truth either. STEPHAN : Oh, okay, so I'm going to ask you questions, can you answer them? Either in your way, or the real truth, I want to see if I can tell the difference. MELANIE : Sure. STEPHAN : How's life? MELANIE : Complicated, how about you? STEPHAN : Pretty good. What's your favorite subject? MELANIE : Well... I don't exactly know right now, we just started school... STEPHAN : Yeah, that's true. MELANIE : Yeah, it is. STEPHAN : Do you believe in love? MELANIE : What do you mean? STEPHAN : Like, do you believe that we can fall in love, like teenagers? Do you even think there's a thing called love? MELANIE : Love's a funny subject... isn't it? It's so hard to tell the difference between love and, well, lust or something. STEPHAN : Yeah, it is. Have you even been in love? MELANIE : Actually... I don't think I have. How about you? STEPHAN : Maybe. MELANIE : Want to tell me who? STEPHAN : No... I really don't want to talk about it. MELANIE : It's fine, I understand. STEPHAN : So... MELANIE : So, could you tell if I was telling the truth, the real, whole truth, or the truth people want to hear? STEPHAN : Didn't you tell the truth on everything? MELANIE : Not exactly... I did for most of them except for the question on if I believe in love, or if I even think there's a thing called love. STEPHAN : Oh. Right! I remember, you just said that love's a funny subject and it's hard to tell the difference between things. MELANIE : Yeah. STEPHAN : Oh! I get what you mean now, you're like... mixing up your words to make it seem like you're really answering the question when you're really not. I get it now! And you're so good at it. MELANIE : Yeah, years of practice at manipulating people. It really pays off. STEPHAN : How do you do it? MELANIE : If I tell you, I'd have to kill you. Ha, not really. But it wouldn't be my secret anymore, would it? The bell rings and the class is shown getting up and going to walk out the door.
MELANIE : Well, I'll see you later. STEPHAN : Next hour! MELANIE : Drama... right? STEPHAN : Yeah. MELANIE : Sorry, I have, like, the worst memory ever! STEPHAN : It's fine, I understand.
Scene fades out. DEAR VIENNA by OWL CITY is playing softly in the background. The scene fades away to their next class room; drama class.
MR. HAIL : Pair up, you guys, it'll be a boy-girl scene, nothing romantic, don't worry.
The whole class mutters and they're looking around for a person to pair with. A few people already got pairs and are walking to Mr. Hail's desk to get the script. Melanie is the only one still sitting in her chair, waiting for the class to even out. Stephan spots her, and walks away from the blonde girl who's trying to flirt with him.
STEPHAN : Hey, Mel! At the sound of her name, people turn around- there's a few people heard muttering "there's a Mel in this class?" other people are saying what in the heck would Stephan want with Mel, and why would Mel want to pair up with Stephan? Melanie looks up, surprised and sees Stephan walking towards her and he sits down in the seat next to her. The class turns away and goes back to talking about miscellaneous stuff.
STEPHAN : Have a partner yet? MELANIE : If I had a partner... would I be sitting here or would I be going through my lines? STEPHAN : Oh yeah, good point. Wanna be partners? MELANIE : Sure, I'll get the scripts.
Melanie seems unruffled by Stephan's obvious attempts at flirting, Stephan looks surprised because it usually works on everyone. When Melanie turns away, walking away from him a small, shy, smile is on her face and her cheeks turn slightly red. By the time she went to Mr. Hail's desk and back, the calm, I-don't really-care look on her face is still there.
MELANIE : Here you go.
They both start reading it over. Melanie's done with her script first, and is shown just looking at him with a look in her eyes. When he's done, she looks away and pretends to read her script.
STEPHAN : He lied! MELANIE : What? STEPHAN : It's not supposed to be anything romantic. MELANIE : It's not that romantic- it's more random. You know? STEPHAN : Excuse me? MELANIE : Um, yeah? STEPHAN : Um, Mel... MELANIE : Wait- what? STEPHAN : It's my line. MELANIE : Yeah, and 'yeah' is my line too... okay, it's 'yes', but no need to get too formal, right? STEPHAN : Good point. I was wondering if you could help me with something. MELANIE : My mother told me not to talk to strangers. STEPHAN : No, no, it's not like that- I was just looking for the... zoo? Why would I be looking for a zoo? MELANIE : Because your character's trying to flirt with her... but doesn't know how to use a pick up line.... BOTH : And is using the worst pick up line in the history of pick up lines. STEPHAN : Ha, this guy's an idiot. MELANIE : Tell me about it. Anyways, oh, I see. STEPHAN : So, do you know where it is? MELANIE : Where what is? STEPHAN : The zoo! MELANIE : No, I don't live around here. STEPHAN : Then where do you live? MELANIE : My, oh my, getting a little nosy isn't he? I don't know where I live? What the heck? STEPHAN : What's wrong? MELANIE : I think my character has a really bad memory... and is bipolar. And your character's just a really bad flirt and really nosy... and... STEPHAN : Therefore, they're perfect for each other! So, are you okay? MELANIE : No, I'm not okay. No way in the heck am I okay! STPEHAN : Wow, way to get dramatic Missy! MELANIE : Dramatic is my middle name! BOTH : Just kidding! MELANIE : Do you believe in fate? STEPHAN : Yeah, I believe in fate. But what's your definition of fate? MELANIE : Something that is... unavoidable... like DESTNIY!
A brunette girl with blue eyes turns around and looks at Melanie waving hi to her.
DESTINY : Oh! Hi Melanie! MELANIE : You're in the play! DESTINY : I know! I feel so special!
Melanie and Destiny turns back to their partners.
STEPHAN : Yes. MELANIE : Huh? STEPHAN : Yes, I believe in fate. MELANIE : Ohhhh. Well, I don't. In real life and in the script. STEPHAN : You don't? How come? Then why did you ask me if I did? MELANIE : I don't know, it's just so stupid. Ask you what? STEPHAN : If I believe in fate. MELANIE : I don't know... STEPHAN : Well, do you mind if I sit down? MELANIE : You are sitting down... but sure, it's a free country! It's a free country! STEPHAN : Umn, is something the matter? MELANIE : No, I'm fine. But I love that line 'it's a free country', that's what I'm going to say from now on! STEPHAN : Ha, wow. But, what are you doing tonight? MELANIE : Not talk to any strangers. But, I'm actually going to go over to Kim's house. STEPHAN : Me neither! Well, I'm not going to Kim's house... but I'm going over to George's. MELANIE : George? Ugh, I don't like him... STEPHAN : How come? MELANIE : Josh... STEPHAN : Oh yeah, I've heard about how he ruined your relationship with Josh, so he was the 'Kimberly' in Josh's life. MELANIE : Yeah, pretty much. STEPHAN : I like you.
Stephan's looking at Melanie, and she blushes, but covers it up by looking down at her script.
MELANIE : I like you too.
They're just looking at each other, Melanie's blush is going away because she's covering it up.
MELANIE : Nice run through. STEPHAN : Oh, yeah. It's quite interesting. MELANIE : Ah. I love my weird character. STEPHAN : And I guess I love my nosy character.
They sit in silence for another moment, just looking at each other. The chorus of FALL FOR YOU by SECONDHAND SERENADE plays softly for a few seconds and then fades away.
STEPHAN : You don't seem like the type who would act. MELANIE : Well, I am and I love it. STEPHAN : Really? MELANIE : Yeah, it gives you an excuse to step out of your comfort zone. STEPHAN : I guess. I still can't picture you... acting. MELANIE : Well, that's because you barely know me. STEPHAN : Fine. Convince me of something. MELANIE : If you convince me of something first... but I'm the most gullible person ever. STEPHAN : Alright, I'll do it by the end of this week. MELANIE : Same here.
The scene fades away and shows to them walking in the hallways and a girl with a band t-shirt looking at them.
MELANIE : I hate you! Get away from me! STEPHAN : Fine. I don't give a poop. You're just an attention sleeper anyways. MELANIE : What the- oh my god... Screw. You.
Melanie's looking at him with tears in her eyes and he's staring blankly at her. She walks away, trying to blink back her tears and Stephan stand there- shocked. KADE- a short blonde kid with blue eyes and KIMBERLY- a girl with brown hair walk up to him.
KADE : Woah, who's she? STEPHAN : A girl... Melanie. KIMBERLY : What did you do to Mel? STEPHAN : I didn't do anything! KIMBERLY : Doesn't seem like it... KADE : Does it really matter? KIMBERLY : What? Are you kidding? He just made a girl cry- of course it matters! KADE : Yeah, but it seems like she's just another girl to mess with. KIMBERLY : God, Kade, shut up. Maybe she actually means something to him. Right, Stephan?
Kimberly and Kade turn around to look at Stephan, and he's not paying attention- he's looking to the place where Melanie disappeared.
BOTH : Stephan? STEPHAN : Yeah? KIMBERLY : I know who she is, she's my friend, but... KADE : God, tell Kim that she's just another girl who's fallen too hard for you. KIMBERLY : No! You like her, don't you? STEPHAN : She's just a friend. KADE : Then why is she crying? STEPHAN : I don't know. KIMBERLY : Well... it's obvious that you did something wrong. STEPHAN : What did I do? KADE : Well, for starters when she told you she hates you, you were like, I don't care... KIMBERLY : And then you told her she was an attention sleeper... BOTH : Big mistake. STEPHAN : I did that? KIMBERLY : God, think about it, if you really care about her, watch what you say- KADE : It seems like she's not just another girl to you. KIMBERLY : Maybe... KADE : He likes her! STEPHAN : No! Shut up! She's just a friend.
Kimberly and Kade share a knowing look.
STEPHAN : What should I do? KIMBERLY : Go talk to her! KADE : Yeah, don't wimp out. STEPHAN : But- KIMBERLY : No buts, just go.
Stephan chases after her, and Kade and Kimberly smirk.
Scene blacks out and fades into history class. Melanie is sitting behind Stephan and she's looking at her paper- drawing random doodles. FALL FOR YOU by SECONDHAND SERENADE resumes playing. Stephan passes her a note, she looks at it. Camera zooms into his writing: ARE YOU OKAY? Melanie bits her lip before writing back. This goes on for a few minutes, showing both people's faces and expressions. When the teacher is done talking, and desks start moving- the note is dropped on the floor and camera zooms up on it.
ARE YOU OKAY? what do you think? I'M SORRY. for what? I DIDN'T MEAN WHAT I SAID. i know, neither did i. WHY WERE YOU MAD? i wasn't. you told me to convince you of something, so i did. OH. WOW. sorry, i probably should have told you earlier. it was just so funny watching you get worked up about it. IT'S FINE. friends? FRIENDS.
Melanie and Stephan are on opposite sides of the classroom, it's showing him staring blankly at her and when she turns around to look at him- he blushes and turns away. When he catches her doing the same thing, she blushes.
Music fades out. Scene fades away to Melanie and Stephan walking to science class together. Kade and Kimberly are seen in the background, smirking. A tall, tan, brunette boy with the school's soccer jersey on walks by and Melanie moves closer to Stephan, her eyes go on the floor, her face drops, and her smile is fake and she's just nodding- lost in her thoughts. The tall, brunette- JOSH- stares at her and walks into the classroom.
JOSH : What? New seats?
Melanie and Stephan share a look.
MELANIE : Let's hope we don't have crappy seats. STEPHAN : Well, the people in our class aren't that bad. MELANIE : Yeah, you can say that... I can't. STEPHAN : How come? MELANIE : Josh... Josh's friends... Kelli... Kelli's friends... STEPHAN : What did Kelli ever do to you? MELANIE : A lot of stuff...
Stephan doesn't press the subject any further, they walk into the classroom together and look at the seating chart. The seating chart makes Melanie sit next to Josh and Stephan sit on the other side of the room.
MELANIE : Oh... shoot... STEPHAN : Do you want me to ask Ms. Nickle if you could sit by me?
Melanie blushes a little and hope flickers in her eyes before she catches Josh's gaze.
MELANIE : Oh, um, no... I'll be fine... I guess.
They walk to their seats. Josh and Melanie are sitting there awkwardly, Stephan is looking at them.
JOSH : So... MELANIE : Yeah... JOSH : You and Stephan. MELANIE : What? JOSH : Going out yet? MELANIE : No, we're just friends. JOSH : Doesn't seem like it from here. MELANIE : What are you talking about? JOSH : You like him... don't you? MELANIE : What? JOSH : Come on, I know you, we went out. I know when you like someone. MELANIE : No... JOSH : Do you like him? MELANIE : Um, no...
Melanie blushes as she looks at the floor, she stares at Stephan for a minute, he catches her eye and smiles. She smiles back, but blushes and looks back at the floor. Josh looks at her, nodding so slightly before he says in a whisper.
JOSH : You can't hide obvious things from me. No matter how much you deny it, I know it's true.
Melanie looks up at him, he stares down at her. She cringes as she looks at him and looks away- her gaze going towards Stephan as he mouths ARE YOU OKAY? Melanie smiles slightly and nods painfully. Stephan mouths again YOU'LL BE FINE. Melanie smiles and gives him a nod of thanks before whispering back to Josh, who's smirking.
MELANIE : You can believe what you want; because, fine, I admit it. I'm falling. And no one's there to catch me. No one ever catches me.
Josh looks uncomfortably at the ground and whispers something along the lines of I DID, before looking away. Melanie looks longingly over at Stephan for a while before turning back to pay attention to the teacher. The scene ends with Stephan looking over at Melanie and Melanie looking over at Stephan. The scene fades out.
END OF ACT I.
