The Unbreakable Bond of Friendship
Chapter 1
"Mama do I have to go here?", asked a short young looking- brown headed girl, looking up at her mother, fear shining in her ocean blue eyes. Her mother only nodded."Yes Carmen, you're too gifted for regular public school!", she reminded her daughter. Carmen only rolled her eyes. How many times had she heard this the last few days?
Carmen looked down at the navy blue plaid skirt and lighter blue polo shirt she was wearing, her new school uniform, then at the huge brick building 40 feet in front of her, which in big black letters above the double doors the the entrance read "Kerwin Boarding School For The Academicaly Gifted". She was nervous. She wasn't going to lie, her stomach was in knots just thinking of starting a new school! "I'll never make any new friends!", she thought bitterly. Her mother gestured her toward the double doors. At this point, Carmen knew there was no hope for her to get out of the new school. "I miss Hedly already!", she thought desperatley. Hedly High School in Hedly, Arkansas was the school Carmen had attended before the school had decided she was simply too smart for their teachers. And with a sick feeling in her stomach, Carmen and her mother took their first steps down the sidewalk that would forever change her life forever.
"Class, it is time for you to pick a seat!", said a short thin blonde-headed woman in her thirties as Carmen walked into her first ever class in her new school. Carmen scrambled toward the tables and desks arranged for two people per desk. She ended up at a seat in the very front. Carmen had never been a popular student at Hedly, and since she was new, she didn't want to deal with all the other students in the room, who upon further discovery, she realized were all freshmen, so she quicky sat on the left side of the desk in the very front of the room, expecting no one to sit by her. She was startled when a girl about average height with long black hair and sapphire eyes came and stood in front of her. "C-Can I sit with you?", she asked, gesturing toward the seat by Carmen. Carmen nodded shyly and the girl sat down awkwardly in the seat beside her. "I'm Carmen", Carmen said shyly, though truthfully she was excited to know about this new girl. The girl seemed to sense her thoughts, and turned to her. "I'm Sarina!", she said in a cheerful tone that startled Carmen. "Well you ain't so shy after all!", Carmen blurted out, then blushed. Sarina looked at her weirdly then giggled, making Carmen blush. "You've got an accent! Where are you from?", she asked. "A-Arkansas...", Carmen told the her. Sarina almost bursted out of her seat in happiness. "Ohh! I country girl!", she announced quite loudly. Everyone turned and stared for a minute. Carmen hurridly hushed her. "Sorry!", Sarina said with a laugh, "So is it true? Do men really hold doors open for women in the South?". "Umm, I guess?", Carmen answered awkwardly. "Everyone in New York just slams the door in eachother's faces!". Carmen just stared at Sarina weirdly as she realized that the Kerwin was in New York. She immediatley felt stupid and blushed from embarrasment afterward. "Now class if we may begin...", said their teacher who introduced herself as Mrs. Avner, "It is time for your first English 1 class of the year...".
Close to 47 minutes later, the bell rang for the student's second hours. Everyone rose out of their chairs and as Sarina threw her backpack over her shoulder, she noticed a small Pikachu keychain hanging off of her backpack. Her eyes widened with shock and pleasure. "Sarina, is that a Pikachu I see hanging off of your bag?", she asked bluntly. Sarina blushed with a nod. "Yeah...", she trailed off. Carmen was estatic. "I've loved Pokemon since I was, like, 8!", she exclaimed. "Really?!". Sarina's eyes lit up. Carmen nodded estatically. The two walked to their next class together, realizing they had the same class, talking about Pokemon in hushed whispers, both feeling as if they had a new best friend.
However, a brick wall came between the two later that day at lunch as the two sat down at an empty lunch table. "Pokeshipping is AWSOME!", Carmen declared, narrowing her eyes at Sarina, "Ash and Misty are MENT TO BE! How could you think different?!". Sarina's sapphire eyes narrowed at Carmen. "I'm telling you!", she exclaimed, "Pearlshipping OWNS! Ash and Dawn are the BEST!". Within 10 seconds, Carmen had retaliated and the girls had gotten into a heated debate that went on until a girl a few inches taller than Carmen, yet still consiterably shorter than Sarina sat down at the table. Both girls stopped talking at stared at her. She had shoulder-length blonde hair and green eyes. Neither of them recognized her from their classes. "I'm Kiki", the girl said, reading the looks of confusion on their faces, "I'm a Sophmore". Carmen and Sarina introduced themselves. "We're freshmen", they said at the same time. Kiki laughed. "You guys sure you aren't twins?", she asked them. Sarina giggled slightly, obviously amused by the thought. "That's impossible! I was born on May 26th, 1995!". Carmen looked at her in shock. "You're kidding!", she exclaimed. Sarina slowly shook her head. "No I'm not....", she said. Carmen was still in shock. "But I was born on May 26th 1995!", she announced. The girls sat and stared at eachother in aww. Kiki giggled. "That is so cool!", she stated firmly. "Weird!", Carmen and Sarina said at the same time, then narrowed their eyes at eachother, "Stop that!", they said again. Kiki sighed sadly. "Wish I had an unbiological twin!". Both girls just smiled at her. Kiki tackled both of them with a hug. "No time to dwell on the negative! I have a couple of friends I want you guys to meet!", she said. "Okay...", Sarina said awkwardly, not used to being hugged all that much by people she didn't know too well. Carmen was so in shock from the tackle hug, she really couldn't respond. Kiki raised her hand and gestured their way. Two girls got up from a distant table and walked their way. "Oh no!", Carmen thought in despair, "They're not gunna wanna be around us!". As the girls got closer, Carmen noticed the first girl was tall with strawberry blonde hair and blue eyes, while the other had shoulder-length red hair and baby blue eyes and was only an inch or two shorter than the first. When they sat down at Carmen's table, they looked at Carmen and Sarina, then at Kiki. "So, who are your new friends?", asked the strawberry blonde. Kiki grinned. "Viola, Jamie", she said gesturing to the strawberry blonde first, then to the red head, "Meet Carmen and Sarina", she said pointing to each girl in turn. "Violet!", Sarina giggled. Viola cracked a grin. Carmen rolled her eyes. "I'm the older one...", she said seriously. "No you're not!", Sarina squeaked. "Oh yeah?". "Oh yeah!". "Oh yeah?". "Wanna prove it fool?". "You da fool!". "No YOU da fool, fool!". And after a brief exchange of times of birth, and a quick time-zone conversion, Carmen was defeated by 4 hours and 25 minutes. Kiki had to explain to Viola and Jamie what was going on as the two battled, and when Carmen and Sarina realized that there were still other people at the table, they were embarrased, though Sarina kept her triumphant look while Carmen looked rather defeated.
It didn't take long for the girls to become best friends, and later that night, Carmen realized that she and Sarina shared a dorm. "Great!", she teased her friend, "So not only do I have to put up with you during the day, I have to deal with us being in the same dorm now?!". Sarina nodded happily and the girls unpacked their dufflebags that had been brought up ealier into their dressers that had been provided, hung up their other 4 uniforms into their closets on opposite sides of the room, took turns in the bathroom changing into their pajamas, put the uniforms they wore that day into a basket and put them outside for the maid to pick up, then brushed their teeth and got into their twin beds on opposite sides of the room. "Goodnight, Sarina", Carmen said contentedly. "Goodnight, Carmen", came her reply. Each of the girls said a quick silent prayer, then drifted off to sleep, thinking about how wonderful the previous day had been.
