I thought that I had already made a thread that addressed this somewhat but apparently I haven't O.o, so here it is, it's pretty short because it's not that complicated:
In Christianity, it's not solely about doing the right thing. See, when you accept Christ into your heart, and start developing a relationship with Him, you want to obey His word. The Bible says that it's not by works that we get to heaven, all it says is that you have to believe: "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, and whosoever believes in him, shall not perish, but have everlasting life" John 3:16 And "8For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9not by works, so that no one can boast." Ephesians 2:8+9 Think of the thief that was on the cross next to Jesus, he did horrible things his whole life and gained salvation because he believed: "One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!" But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he said, "since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong." Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."" Luke 23:40-43
