Shadowpaw only liked the light, he slept outside of the apprentice den becuase the light from Starpelt kept his past away from his dreams. See Shadowpaw was different, he had dreams and they came true.
Shadowpaw's legacy is not known throughout the clans, but should be, for it has put everyone in life threatening danger, more than once.
"Shadowpaw! Leafsong wants you to come with her and Lightstep on the dawn patrol." Sandear called to the black cat, he purred at her and she licked his ear affectionatly," Go, unless you don't want to go..."
"No, I'll go." He bounded through the clearing of the camp and ran staright intp Lightstep. "Sorry." He murmered. Lightstep looked at him and sniffed, "You best be careful, one day you could collide with a fox or worse, something from your nightmares."
Shadowpaw hissed and raised his hair. How dare he say that! It wasn't his fault that he had the dreams.
Leafsong stepped infront of the two snarling cats, "Enough! I smell Riverclan cats..."
The patrol went past the camp and near the Riverclan border, sure enough Stormkit and Onekit were playing with leaves and bouncing slighlty on the Shadowclan territory. "You best go back, before someone thinks your tresspassinng and hurts you.": she said it smoothly but firmly. The kits opened there eyes at her and then saw Shadowpaw, Onekit sqeeuled and bolted back to her camp. Stormkit sat and stared at him, "A..are you the death cat?" she whispered.
Shadowpaw looked down at his paws.
Stormkit approached the apprentice," I'm sorry about your mother..." and she took off after Onekit.
Shadowpaw sulked behind the others went they went back to camp, he could sense Leafsongs pity for him, he looked at her to find that she had been looking back at him, she quickly turned her head and tried to pretend nothing happened. Shadowpaw looked up at the sky, birds were flying everywhere and the clouds promised rain.
When they entered the camp all the cats stopped to burn their glares at Shadowpaw's pelt. Lightstep looked at him in hate and padded towards the fresh kill pile. Shadowpaw groaned, he was used to the hate and hostility his own clan showed to him, they blamed him for the past that had happened, but it wouldn't have happened if they had listened. Starclan sent him the dreams so he could warn them, but his clanmates thought he was plagued by evil and cruelty. As night fell he fell into a unsettled sleep.
Shadowpaw found himself in a misty forest, there were silohettes of cats around him and whisperings, but he couldn't quite make out the conversation. Then a silver cat appeared among them. " Mother?" Shadowpaw croaked, the cat winked at him.
"Danger is coming my son, a bear will befall upon the clans, he will be injured, you must nurse it back to health, if you kill it or let it die,the cats will be hunted down by it's family...Beware
Shadowpaw jolted upright. He looked around and realised it was morning, their leader was at Starstone and was addressing them.
"There were loud noises coming from the forest last night, we need a large patrol to go out. Lighstep and Sandear will make the patrol."
Sandear looked for Shadowpaw, "C'mon! Your coming."
Shadowpaw whispered, " I know what was in the forest, my mother told me last night."
Sandear looked at Shadowpaw with fear, "What? Is it dangerous?"
Shadowpaw shook his head and looked away, the bear wouldn't hurt them, would it?
They patrol made their way though the thick underbrush of leaves and twigs, the scent of something large filled their noses.
Lightstep nodded to Sandear, Shadowpaw and Icerose. They approached where the scent had came from and stiffled gasps.
A bear was sprwaled out on the forest floor, unconcious and bleeding. The bear was black and larger then anything they'd every seen, it was almost twelve foxtails long.
Shadowpaw was the only one not surprised, " We need to help it." He said.
Lightstep glared at him, "Are you crazy?" he hissed, " The thing could wake up and kill us any second!"
"I..I had a dream about this... we need to nurse it back to health..." Shadowpaw looked at his paws but then returned Lightsteps glare, he wasn't going to let Lightstep push him around.
Lightstep growled," I don't believe you!"
Suddenly, the sun was covered by clouds and lighting struck the tree above Lightstep. The gigantic branch tumbled towards him, Lightstep was to afraid to move. Shadowpaw hurled himself at Lightstep and knocked him towards the bear and away from the falling branch. Lightstep stood up immediatly and looked away from Shadowpaw. " We will send cats later when it wakes up so Rainsong can deal with it. I will tell Moonstar." and then he walked off, not even thanking Shadowpaw for saving his life.
Shadowpaw padded into the nursery, Lightstep had sent him there to help with Goldenlily, she had just had kits and everyone knew she wasn't in the greatest mood.
"Shadowpaw! Watch Goldkit for me while I go ask Greytail for somethiing for my cut I got..."
Shadowpaw pricked his ears up at this," When did you get that?"
"Last night, I was attacked by something huge, well I tripped but no one knows that." She snuffed and walked away.
"Shadowpaw, remeber that you have enemies, even within your own clan, and what ever is out their, it's probably here for you." Iceleaf looked at Shadowpaw solemly and padded away.
Shadowpaw heaved a sigh and went off to hunt, he soon had caught a fat vole and three juicy looking mice. He carried them into the camp and dropped them at the elder's den. Mousetail nodded to him, " Thanks Shadowpaw." As he walked away he heard him mutter. "Death cat." Something took hold of him and Shadowpaw reared around and clawed at Mousetail's face, the cat fell to the ground whining. Lightstep appeared, eyes wideopen. " Someone get Snowpelt!" he cried. Shadowpaw turned away and heade straight for the tunnel that led to the river and past anywhere the cats knew, he could hear Death cat and other names behind him closing in... until at last, everythin went black.
